It’s time to fight for family…
Article by Brandon the Hero Guy
This movie is for sure one of my top 5 favorite features this year!
Beast is a 2021 survival/ Horror movie its written by Ryan Engle and Directed by Baltasar Kormakur. It stars Idris Elba, Sharlto Copley, Leah Jefferys and Iyana Halley.
Beast tells the story of Dr Nate Samuels (Idris Elba) and his two Daughters Norah Samuels (Leah Jefferies) and Meredith Samuels (Iyana Halley). They go on vacation to South Africa to visit their late mother’s village, as well as a wildlife sanctuary run by Nate’s best friend, Martin Battles (Shartlo Copley).
However, things take horrific turns when a rogue man-eating lion stalks them, and attacks neighboring villages, and wild life as well. This lion will stop at nothing until it gets what he’s hunting so Nate and his daughters do what they need to survive and face this carnivorous monster.
First off, the story is just like any other survival feature that stars a rogue animal. However, this movie has a lot more to it, and it’s pretty well paced. Before it gets to the point, it lets you get to know the characters, notably Nate and his family; with a bit of their estranged relationship which relates to the daughter’s late mother. That plays a key part in the story later on.
The visuals of this movie were very well done, and it feels like you’re in Africa with the family. It shows that Africa’s wilderness has so many amazing species. Though the real star of this movie is the man-eating lion.
The lion was incredibly terrifying, especially in the first scene where it encounters Nate and his family (no spoilers). The action sequence felt like an adrenaline rush of fear and terror. It also felt eerie as well, every scene the lion was in was anxiety ridden, and it made me jump a few times.
This movie also shows how lions hunt and can be fearsome when they have to but nothing like this since this movie is purely fiction. Also, we get more backstory about the lion, and why it’s murderous. Which in a way, the lion was basically in the right but it ties in to its earlier introduction which not many animal horror movies do.
Also, there’s another scene with this animal that was so intense and it was in the trailer with the car sequence that reminded me of the T Rex attack scene from the first Jurassic Park movie. It had me on the edge of my seat wondering if the family was going to make it out alive. What made the Lion so terrifying was its intelligence, and how it outsmarted some of its victims.
This movie has a lot of educational facts about Lions and Animal behavior which lets the audience know to respect wildlife and nature by not interfering also the issue of illegal poaching.
This movie is for sure one of my top 5 favorite features this year because it’s not every day you see a black lead actor doing features like this, and this was the first time we get a horror feature taking place in Africa (to my knowledge) which is why this movie should be supported this is a movie that I’ll definitely watch again.
