The Best of the Tommorrowverse
Article by Brandon the Hero Guy
Legion of Super-Heroes is the 6th installment of The DC Tommorowverse. It’s written by Josie Campbell and Jeff Wamester. This movie tells the story of Kara Zor EL the cousin of KaL EL /Superman who like him also immigrated to Earth after the destruction of their planet Krypton, and tries to adjust to Earth like her cousin but isn’t trusted by humanity due to her lack of control of her powers.
This causes Superman to send her to the Legion Academy in the distant Future Timeline where she meets The Legionnaire students and trains with them but soon discovers a terrifying secret with her fellow classmates that threatens the future of The Academy.
This story was very simple to follow. It really sets the tone for what type of film it’s going to be it mostly starts off by getting to know Kara Zor El (Supergirl) with her origins on Krypton. The opening sequence reminded me so much of Man of Steel opening scene.
It instantly got me invested just off that sequence, and we get to see Kara immigrate to Earth and try to figure things out amongst humanity. She tries her best to adapt, and it shows how relatable she is; which really hits home especially when she’s mistrusted and judged by others especially Batman which will play a bigger key role in the story (No Spoilers).
Also, the world building is excellent! This movie alone ties in to other events from past Tommorowverse features letting the audience know that these movies are all connected. The movie doesn’t do too much of that, just a small number of references and one fresh JL cameo to remind you.
And I really loved the Legionnaires in this movie majority of the characters have slight few changes but the rest were all spot on my favorites in this movie were definitely Timberwolf, Mon- EL , DawnStar and Duplicate Girl.
Also, the interactions with the Legionnaires were really good especially between Brainiac 5 and Supergirl. Their chemistry in this movie was so good but it starts off with them not being fond of one another, and there’s even an epic fight sequence with these two which really had me on the edge of my seat. It even had some great humor with it as well.
Speaking of fight sequences, the action and animation was perfection one of my favorite moments with the action was with Duplicate Girl. She had a hand-to-hand fight scene that instantly reminded me of Roarsach’s fight scene with the Police from Watchmen. It was so intense, she definitely stood out. The same with Timber Wolf he was tearing enemies apart, though it was a small sequence, but very entertaining and his character was accurate like The Comics.
The third act was surprisingly good though the whole side plot with Mon-EL (Won’t spoil) caught me off guard because it was completely unexpected. But I get what they were trying to do with him. Especially since the Tommorowverse is an entirely different universe from the past shared universe. This movie basically did what Beware My Power did but other than that the third act was still enjoyable.
Legion of Superheroes is definitely a must see! What I like about the DC Animated movie Universe as a whole is that most of the time it gives the fans what they want to see. It keeps a huge majority of the characters as who they are, and sticks to the source material. Take Supergirl for example, she actually interacts and works with Superman instead of replacing him.
He literally teaches her how to adjust to Earth, and it also shows her having self-doubts and making mistakes, but learning from them. Giving her character growth, something DC Studios could learn from the animation department; mainly not replacing their most prominent characters their protégés.
After the movie there’s a very important and exciting end credit scene that sets up a big DCAU event for this year and all I have to say is get ready for what you’re about to see for the next movie in the Tommorowverse. So, without further ado I give Legion of Superheroes a 9.5/10!
