The Dark Sides of Social Media

Who’s On the Other Side of the Keyboard?
Missing is a 2023 thriller written and directed by Nicholas D. Johnson. It stars Storm Reid, Nia Long, Megan Suri, Ken Leung, Daniel Henny, Thomas Barbusca, Joaquin de Almeida, Tim Griffin, and Amy Landecker.
This movie tells the story of June Allen, an 18 year old social media user who’s searching for her mother Grace Allen (Nia Long). Her mother went missing in Columbia with her new fiancé (Kevin Lin).
When this happens June desperately uses her internet resources, via social media, to search for her mother. Her disappearance leads to many terrifying twists and turns throughout this desperate struggle.
To start it off the story was very simple to follow and it right off the bat it sets the tone for the audience. It lets us get to know the protagonist, June, who is shown to be very relatable. Especially when it comes to the struggle of dealing with loss and moving on; it really hits hard.
I love the relationship she has with her mother, Grace, who’s shown to be very over protective of her daughter, and for good reason. One of the things I like about this movie is that it brings awareness to the dangers of using dating apps and communicating with unknown users on social media.
Another thing it brings awareness to is domestic abuse with relationships and this movie doesn’t sugarcoat it at all. It shows how important it is to keep yourself protected by any means, and how users of the internet have their own opinions and theories on an a missing individual similar to real incidents that happen. The movie explores how the internet and social media can be a good asset, and also a lethal.
The entire cast did amazing job, especially Storm Reid. She really gave her best performance in this movie, and showed how smart and resourceful her character was; using the internet and her tech to investigate with many individuals including the CIA and FBI to track her mother down.
This movie reveals (no spoilers) a huge mystery about her late father and it’ll really catches you off guard. Reid definitely deserves an Oscar for this. Not only for Missing, but Euphoria as well. She’s too underrated as an actress, and should definitely get the recognition that is needed. In the 3rd act is where she really shines and that’s is when I was on the edge of my seat.
Missing is definitely a movie that you must see and it will really give you an open mind on how both social media apps and streaming can be a big benefit in both the right and wrong hands, so without further ado I give Missing 10/10
