A Darker, Grittier MCU Experience
Werewolf By Night is the latest MCU Halloween special based off the Marvel Comics series. It’s written by Heather Quinn and Directed by Michael Giaccchino and stars Gale Garcia, Laura Donnelly and Harriet Sandra Ellis.
This show tells the story of the character Jack Russell (Gale Garcia) who is inflicted with a terrifying family curse that turns him into a savage Werewolf, during The night of a full moon.
When his secret is out, he’s targeted by a group of monster hunters who seek to take him down. Unknown to them that these hunters are one’s who’ll be the prey for the beast.
This miniseries was definitely my favorite MCU show of Phase 4. One of the main things I loved about this show in particular is that the entire show was displayed in black and white; giving it that classic Universal Monsters theme and having a lot of inspiration from the classic 1941.
The characters were all spot on, especially Jack Russell portrayed by Gale Garcia. He made the character his own. The Werewolf sequences were incredibly well done and not to mention terrifying and ripped right from the comics.
My favorite sequence is the hallway fight scene and Jack Russell violently rips apart armed guards and it gets gory. This is definitely a sample of what we may get towards a darker grittier take of the MCU.
It makes up for the past shows that didn’t really land. I can definitely see Wolverine and Punisher with brutal scenes like this especially with Logan escaping the Weapon X program in the MCU; that’s what Werewolf’s scenes remind me of.
And also, the easter eggs are a reference to the comics were very well put together. Especially the main references that related to Wanda Maximoff and Wundagore Mountain, which was very exciting to see.
Marvel really took their time with this show if they do this with future movies and don’t rush, they’ll be back on track with content like this. And it’s all fans want; a proper portrayal of the characters especially certain characters with darker stories.
If Marvel can make Jack Russell this brutal and gritty, they need to do the same with the upcoming Blade movie. Not to mention this is also the kind of gritty content DC does, and why the DCEU fan community wants their movies to go back to their darker tone with Snyder’s line up.
Werewolf by night was definitely an enjoyable series and I highly recommend viewing this show it was everything I could ask for as a comic fan and it truly delivered. So, without further ado I give Werewolf by Night a 10/10.
